(Undated)– Financial institutions across Iowa are issuing new warnings about online scams and text message attempts, known as “smishing”, aimed at stealing personal and financial information. The text messages appear to be from a consumer’s financial institution and try to trick you into giving your account number or other personally-identifiable information.
They say scams through Facebook Marketplace have been increasing recently. Warning signs include overpayments; being asked to move the dialogue off Facebook to your phone; and being asked to upgrade to a digital wallet app. Experts say you should also google the address to whoever you’re doing business with to verify it’s real.
