Collision In Osceola County Claims Two Lives

August 21, 2023 Steve Schwaller

(Melvin)– A two-vehicle collision Sunday in Osceola county claimed the lives of two people. The Iowa State Patrol says it happened around 9:15 am at the intersection of County Road A-34 and Highway 59.

Troopers say 27-year-old Dore Oswaldo Hernandes Canales of Sioux City was driving a 2005 GMC eastbound on County Road A-34 and 22-year-old Benjamin Richard Gibson of Sibley was driving a 2016 Ford Explorer southbound on Highway 59. Troopers say Hernandes Canales failed to stop for a stop sign and that the two vehicles collided. The impact caused the vehicle driven by Hernandes Canales to roll. It then collided with a water tower.

Two passengers in the Hernandes Canales vehicle, 24-year-old Jessica Ricardo of Sioux City and a nine-year-old child, were pronounced dead. Two others in that vehicle, a six-year-old juvenile and 54-year-old Edith Marina Canales Rivas of Sioux City, were taken by ambulance to local hospitals. A 10-year-old was also injured in the crash. Gibson was also injured and was transported by ambulance to the Sheldon hospital.
