Spirit Lake City Council Approves Temporary Street Closure Request

July 26, 2023 Steve Schwaller

(Spirit Lake)– The Spirit Lake City Council Tuesday evening approved a request to temporarily close Hill Avenue from 16th Street to Lake Street from 6:00 am until 1:00 pm for the annual Tiki Bike Ride on August 5th. In previous years the closure ran for just a few hours. But an organizer of the event says the number of participants has grown even more, with more than 750 expected this year…

“There’s going to be a lot of bikes and if we end up getting 800, 900, it’s getting real popular. It got written up in a east coast bicycling magazine talking about Spirit Lake being the hidden gem. It’s kind of good for the city, too. There will be a lot of high dollar people coming and spending money.”

Mayor Bruce Keenan said he was concerned over having the closure in place for that long. However it was pointed out a larger portion of Hill Avenue in the downtown area is closed several hours on Thursday evenings for a street market.

The vote to approve the request was unanimous.
