Dickinson Co. Supervisors Approve Contribution Toward Aspen Seemann Memorial Park Project

June 13, 2023 Steve Schwaller

(Spirit Lake)– The Dickinson County Board of Supervisors this (Tues.) morning voted to contribute $10,000 to show local support for a $1 million Community Attraction and Tourism, or CAT Grant, that’s being applied for to help support construction of the Aspen Seemann Memorial Park near the Spirit Lake Schools. The Spirit Lake City Council will consider a similar request at their meeting this (Tues.) evening. Supervisor Jeff Thee said the project would be a boost to efforts to bring younger people into the area…

“Iowa is an aging state. We can think of any number of communities around us that is certainly aging communities. We’re bringing in young families going to our schools, working in our businesses, shopping in our grocery stores. This is so needed. And we’re talking generations, hopefully, following that, so.”

Fellow supervisor Tim Fairchild said he also is very much in favor of the project, but said he wanted some latitude in the length of time the county has to make the contribution…

“Don’t misinterpret what I’m saying, I think it’s a really neat project. But I also, I’ve been staying up kind of late at night studying the budget and the way it’s going to look with the new property tax changes and Dickinson county’s joy ride may be over. We may be working hard to make our budget work, so I want flexibility. That’s all I’m asking for.”

The supervisors approved a stipulation that the $10,000 contribution be paid over the next three budget years at their discretion.
