(Estherville)-The Iowa Lakes Jazz Camp is getting underway. KUOO’s Becky Thoreson has details:
The Iowa Lakes Community College Music Department will host the 42nd Reggie Schive Jazz Camp this week on the Estherville Campus.
Instrumental Music Professor Carol Ayres says, dozens of students will participate in the 5 day camp. “We’re one of the longest running jazz camps in the nation. We have students from all over, but especially Iowa. We have close to 80 students coming from ages 7th grade through 12th grade. They will learn about jazz in various ways. First of all, they will be part of a big band, like what they have at their schools. Then, they’re also part of a small group where they can learn more specific things, and then, we have these great guys that come to teach them and to play for them every night. We call them The Headliners, because that’s what they are.”
She adds that The Headliners will perform several concerts, including Jazz on the Queen II Monday night. “You’re gonna want to get tickets in advance for that. You can get those by contacting the college here in Estherville, or you can go on our facebook page and there are links.”
