Investigation Underway Into Manure Discharge

June 03, 2023 Steve Schwaller

(Hinton)– Residents are being told to stay away from a northwest Iowa stream following a manure discharge.

Officials with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources’ Spencer field office say an unknown quantity of manure from a 3,000 head cattle operation got into Perry Creek west of Hinton, in Plymouth county. They say the feedlot owner was applying effluent from a manure storage structure when runoff traveled down a slope and into the creek.

Officials say they aren’t sure yet as to whether or not a fish kill has occurred, adding that they are continuing to investigate.

A press release doesn’t say when the discharge actually took place.
