(Lakefield, Mn.)– Area corn and soybean crops have emerged and for the most part stands are looking good. Jim Nesseth of Extended Ag Services in Lakefield says there have been issues, however, to our north…
“In some cases we’ve had a number of re-plants, particularly in northern Jackson county and up in Cottonwood county, north of us, where we’ve had just some heavy rains and packing rains and we had some crust on some of those soils. So some of the soybeans have struggled, so a number of re-plant issues there, a little bit of corn, but overall I think the rain has been very beneficial and decent amounts that this crop has really taken off and with these warmer temperatures, you know, I just see excellent yield potential for both corn and soybeans.”
Nesseth adds there were some isolated reports of small hail with some of the activity earlier this week in northwestern Jackson county…
“It was light hail in a lot of cases and the corn actually there is no issue. It’s just kind of what stage the soybeans are in if we have much damage, but I think overall we might have a field or two that might have to be re-planted, particularly over in that Okabena area west of Lakefield, but I think, you know, overall, pretty good.”
Nesseth says some producers have started the first cutting of alfalfa.
