Details Announced For Memorial Day Programs In Spirit Lake & Milford

May 25, 2023 Steve Schwaller

(Spirit Lake)– Details have been released for this year’s Memorial Day Program on the east lawn of the Dickinson County Courthouse. Denny Perry, Commander of the Spirit Lake American Legion, says it will begin at 9:55 am Monday. Perry will also serve as keynote speaker. He says this year’s Grand Marshal is Bob Boettcher…

“And now that name should be familiar to a lot of people in here. Bob is 99-years-old and he has been a continuous member of the American Legion for 80 years. What a record!”

The parade will follow the program. Perry says they’ll begin putting the flags up at the courthouse lawn late Friday afternoon…

“And we’ll start with that about 4:00. I’ll get the trailer up there and uncover it. We’ll start putting flags in all 325 holes. I think I found all 325 this year with the help of quite a few people.”

He says flags will also be put up at a couple of other locations in Spirit Lake…

“There will be flags out at 9 & 71, I don’t have an exact count on that. It’s between 70, 70 plus, or 65 plus. And I had holes dug on the Legion lawn on 15th Street and I’ve got a dozen flags there too. So we put flags in as many places as we can. We’re always looking for a place to put more flags for Memorial Day, so if somebody has an idea come and see me and we’ll figure out if we can do it or not.”

Anyone who can help put up flags is asked to meet at 4:00 pm Friday at the Dickinson County Courthouse.

The Memorial Day program in Milford is scheduled for 11:00 am Monday at Florence Park.
