Spencer City Council Gives Final Approval To New Speed Limits

May 16, 2023 Steve Schwaller

(Spencer)– New, reduced speed limits will be going into effect in some areas of Spencer.

The city council Monday evening gave final approval to the new limits in the area of Iowa Great Lakes Lutheran School, on East 18th Street, as well for the area of 11th Avenue Southwest and Highway 71 on the city’s south side. Police Chief Mark Warburton told the council there will be some leniency with enforcement to give motorists some time to get used to the change…

“So we’ll contact the D.O.T and let them know that you guys have passed that ordinance right now then they’ll go ahead and make recommendations to go ahead and get those signs up as soon as possible. We’ll probably put the speed trailer down there to help people out just a little bit, but yeah, there’s going to some tolerance shown, that’s for sure.”

City officials say the goal with the lower speed limits is to improve safety in those areas and hopefully reduce accidents.
