Officials Emphasize Importance Of Acting On Severe Weather Warnings

March 30, 2023 Steve Schwaller

(Spirit Lake)– With the possibility of thunderstorms and maybe some severe weather in the forecast comes a reminder that it’s important to know ahead of time where to go and what to do if a warning is issued. That’s one of the messages authorities are putting out there as we observe Severe Weather Awareness Week this week in Iowa. Dickinson County Emergency Management Coordinator Mike Ehret says many people only take action if a tornado warning is issued. He says severe thunderstorm warnings also warrant action…

“You know people are generally pretty good about going to where they need to go for tornado warnings but not so much for severe thunderstorm warnings. I really encourage everybody to seek shelter for both kinds of warnings. Just because it’s not a tornado warning doesn’t mean it can’t have high winds and large hail.”

Severe Weather Awareness Week in Iowa concludes tomorrow (Friday).
