Severe Weather Awareness: Make Sure You Have Multiple Ways To Receive Watches & Warnings

March 29, 2023 Steve Schwaller

(Spirit Lake)– As Severe Weather Awareness Week continues in the state of Iowa, officials are reminding everyone of the importance of having multiple ways to receive watches and warnings. Dickinson County Emergency Management Coordinator Mike Ehret says the redundancy is important and could even save your life…

“Radio, t.v, internet, everybody’s got a phone, there’s dozens of apps out there that will give you alerts on your phone. WEA alerts also, the wireless emergency alerts. One thing that was kind of new last year is they started activating those for severe thunderstorms if they meet the criteria of having 80 mph winds or baseball size hail. Your phone will go off for severe thunderstorm warnings when they get to that magnitude. So that’s kind of new. So again, just having a way to get the information.”

And once you have that information, it’s just as important to act on it.
