Our Snowy Winter Is Helping Out With The Drought

March 10, 2023 Steve Schwaller

(Undated)– All of the snow and rain this winter has been beneficial in at least one way: it’s eased the drought situation. Tim Hall is a hydrologist with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources…

“We’ve now seen four months in a row of above normal moisture in the state. We are, in fact, seeing a noticeable improvement in drought conditions. Even though it’s been through the winter, it’s still been a great turn of events.”

Hall says the drought situation will improve even more if the pattern continues into the spring months…

“The changeover seems to indicate there’s a wet trend in the future. If we can see wetter than normal rainfall in the spring months, that will be fantastic.”

The latest U-S Drought Monitor still shows most of Iowa as abnormally dry or in some form of drought. The severity of the drought, however, has eased. Most of northwest Iowa, continues to be in severe drought.
