Dangerous Trail Crossing Comes Up For Discussion At Okoboji City Council Meeting

February 15, 2023 Steve Schwaller

(Okoboji)– There was more discussion at Tuesday evening’s Okoboji City Council meeting about a dangerous trail crossing at Stakeout Road near Exchange Street. A pedestrian was seriously injured after being struck by a vehicle in that crossing late this past summer. City Administrator Michael Meyers says the city, the Trails Board, Dickinson county, and some other partners will be doing several things to improve safety in that area…

“Brush removal around that curve. Obviously there’s a lot of volunteer trees and other brush that can easily be removed. I think that’s going to be a collective effort of the county and the city of Okoboji. And then the city of Okoboji is going to purchase a radar sign to post kind of near the apex of that curve, just to let people know how fast they’re going and slow them down is the intent there.”

Meyers says the goal is to have those things done this spring, prior to increased traffic volumes on the trail.

Meyers adds they continue to look into the possibility of relocating the trail in that area but he says that would be much further into the future.
