(Arnolds Park)-An annual fundraising event for several Lakes Area fire departments will be held this coming weekend.
Jason Simpson with the Milford Fire Department says The Battle of the Chili Pots will be taking place on Saturday from 5-7 pm at the Arnolds Park-Okoboji Fire Station where the departments will compete to see who will win the traveling trophy this year.
“They just have to bring a roaster full of their best hot chili and a roaster full of their mild chili. Along with it, we have a traveling trophy so, if you get voted the best, you get the trophy to hold in your possession for the next year and then return to the chili feed and we put that up for grabs and you can see if you can win it back or if somebody else is gonna come up with a good chili.”
Simpson adds that admission is a freewill donation and those attending will be able to vote for their favorite chili.
“You’ll be given a voting bead and then you vote by putting that bead in the jar in front of the chili you like the best and then, at the end of the night we count the votes and we award the winner.”
He says the proceeds from the event will be divided between participating departments.
“Those departments will use that money toward equipment and certain funds like that, if they need a little something for their department they can use that money to fund that.”
He notes that the event is a good way for residents to meet the firefighters and see the equipment.
“You can bring the kids, take pictures with the firemen, take them on the trucks. We like to interact with the public, especially with the kids.”
This will mark the 5th year for The Battle of the Chili Pots.
