Iowa Lakes Community College to host Jazz Band Contest January 19-20

January 12, 2023 Becky Thoreson

(Estherville)-The Iowa Lakes Jazz Band Contest will be held next week. KUOO’s Becky Thoreson has details:

The Iowa Lakes Community College Music Department will host the annual Jazz band Contest on January 19-20.

Instrumental Music Professor Carol Ayres says, hundreds of students will participate. “We have 16 high schools coming in over the 2 days. 8 schools for 2 each day which is a wonderful amount of people when you think about 25 to 30 kids per band. On Thursday we have the 2A Bands, then on Friday is the 3A and 4A Bands. So, every 45 minutes we have a new band.”

She adds that students will receive feedback from judges. “This is kind of the beginning of the Jazz Contest Season, so to speak. So they’ll get recorded feedback as they play, the judges talk about what’s happening and what they hear, and then when they’re done playing, the judges go up on the stage and actually clinic them and try to help them get better for their next competition.”

She notes that the festival is free and open to the public. “It’s all at The Janice K. Lund Performing Arts Center and it’s free. So, you can just pop in and pop out. It will also be webcast.”
