Schools See Soaring Absentee Rates As Respiratory Illnesses Surge

December 19, 2022 Steve Schwaller

(Des Moines)– The amount of students in Iowa out of school with flu symptoms is skyrocketing.

The Iowa Department of Human Services says 277 schools are reporting at least ten-percent of its students are out with illnesses. That’s up from 54 schools last week. Iowa schools report student absences on any day ten-percent or more of the student body is expected to be out sick.

Most cases are in Central Iowa with 125 schools reporting, and in eastern Iowa with 58 schools reporting.

Iowa H-H-S says flu activity is high in the state as common colds, RSV, and COVID are also rising.
