Wahpeton City Council Adopts Flood Plain Management Ordinance

December 13, 2022 Steve Schwaller

(Wahpeton)– The Wahpeton City Council this (Monday) evening unanimously adopted a flood plain management ordinance. The action follows 1st and 2nd readings on the proposed ordinance held at council meetings in November.

Council member Rosalise Olson outlined revisions made to previous drafts of the proposed ordinance. She added construction of a bridge that will replace culverts at the Lower Gar Outlet could result in future revisions to the ordinance or make it moot altogether…

“I think that information is important for the insurance companies also because they’ll lower the premiums based on the risk. There’s a whole bunch of items and I think that’s an important thing for the insurance companies that are going to be writing insurance in this area.”

The ordinance spells out new requirements for any new construction or renovations made in areas that are within the flood plain of Wahpeton as identified by maps drafted by the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
