Malfunctioning Locomotive Causes Train To Block Hwy 9 NE Of Sibley For Several Hours

October 13, 2022 Steve Schwaller

(Sibley)– A malfunctioning locomotive on a train resulted in a blockage of Highway 9 northeast of Sibley for several hours Wednesday. The train was moving through a crossing on Highway nine, just west of old Highway 60, when it had to stop after flames were seen coming from the exhaust of an engine in the middle of the roughly two mile train. The Sibley Fire Department responded to the scene and monitored the situation.

Authorities say the train’s crew wound up cutting off the lead half of the cars and proceeded to Worthington, and returned later to pick up the rest of the train. There were no reports of any injuries.

Traffic on that area of Highway 9 had to be detoured three to four hours.
