Property Tax Assistance Expanded To Iowans 70 & Older Who Meet Certain Income Guidelines

(Spirit Lake)– Property tax assistance in Iowa has been expanded to include those 70 or older as of December 31st, 2021. It’s the result of a bill passed last session in the Iowa Legislature. Dickinson County Treasurer Kris Rowley says those 70 or older with a 2021 household income less than 250 percent of the federal poverty level are eligible to apply…
“Basically the income that we’re looking at for one person that’s in a household age 70 and older would be less than $32,200. If there’s two people in the home it’s less than $43,550. So it greatly increases the number of people that would be eligible for this. Essentially what it will do is if you file the claim, and it must be filed before June 1st of 2022, keep that date in mind, then you would fill out this claim form and return it to our office before then, and then next tax cycle, so next September, 2022 and March of 2023 for the first and second half, whatever you have for property taxes that year it will mark it as now frozen at that level for the future. But you do have to file a claim every year with my office in case income changes. And so you may or may not be eligible at that point.”
Rowley says it’s in addition to other relief packages already in place…
“So if you’re 65 or older last December 31st, and have a total household income of less than $24,354, you can still qualify for a property tax credit up to $1,000. That’s the cap on it. And that $1,000 includes any homestead credits or other credits you might have. If you’re disable and you’re 18 or older as of last December 31st, the same thing applies. Or if you have a mobile home and you’re 23 years or older and have that same income less than $24,354, then you also can apply and get help with your mobile home taxes.”
