(Spirit Lake)– Today (Mon.) marks a somber anniversary for the Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office.
It was around 7:15 pm on June 8th, 1973 when Deputy George O. Williamson was killed in a collision while responding to Superior after receiving reports of a four-year-old boy who had been struck by a car.
Williamson and another deputy were driving on 330th Street with lights and siren activated when there was collision with another vehicle at the intersection with County Road A-22, or 170th Street. Chief Deputy Williamson and the driver of the other vehicle both died in the collision. The other deputy was seriously injured.
Chief Deputy Williamson was a veteran of the Korean War and had served with the Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office for five years. Prior to that he served with the Spencer Police Department for two years.
A plaque in memory of Chief Deputy Williamson hangs just outside of the Sheriff’s Office at the Dickinson County Courthouse.
