(Sioux City)– A northwest Iowa man has pled guilty to three counts of aiding and assisting in the preparation and presentation of false and fraudulent tax returns and three counts of receiving stolen government money or property.
52-year-old David Miller of Gilmore City admitted as part of a plea deal that he prepared false tax returns while he owned and operated a business that prepares tax returns. The loss totaled slightly more than $16.1 million for the tax years 2012-2015. Miller’s clients were also deprived of some of their refunds. Those losses totaled $36,582 for 2014 through 2016. Federal prosecutors say Miller’s theft of government funds and relevant conduct from 2011 through 2013, and the theft of state government funds, totaled $73,258.
Prosecutors say Miller also failed to report the stolen funds as income, with the additional tax obligations totaling $30,752 for his 2011 through 2016 tax returns.
As part of the plea deal, Miller has agreed to pay a total of $156,706 in restitution to the Internal Revenue Service.
Miller remains free on bond pending sentencing.
