New Mexico Family Injured In Dickinson County Accident

November 23, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– Minor injuries were reported Friday in a two-vehicle accident in Dickinson county. It took place on Highway 86 about three miles north of Highway nine. The Iowa State Patrol says it involved vehicles driven by 49-year-old Bruce Walker of Spirit Lake and 40-year-old Brian Hughes of Albuquerque, New Mexico. Authorities say both vehicles were northbound on Highway 86 with Walker in front. Walker had slowed to turn into a driveway. To avoid a collision, authorities say Hughes attempted to pass Walker on the right. The pickup Hughes was driving then went into the east ditch where it rolled…landing on its top. Hughes and three passengers, 40-year-old Julie Hughes, two-year-old David Hughes and five-year-old Laura Hughes…all of Albuquerque, News Mexico…were taken to Dickinson County Memorial Hospital where they were treated for minor injuries and released. No injuries were reported to Walker.

The five year-old was trapped in the wreckage and was freed by the Milford Rescue Unit.

A 1997 Ford pickup driven by Hughes was totaled. No damage was reported to a 1992 Chevrolet pickup driven by Walker.

The Iowa State Patrol was assisted at the scene by the Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office, Spirit Lake Police Department, Milford Rescue, Spirit Lake Fire Department and ambulances from Dickinson County Memorial Hospital and Lake Park.

The mishap took place around 1:00 p.m. Friday.
