(Spencer)– Charges have been filed against a Spencer man as the result of a meth lab found at a residence in Spencer.
20-year-old Christopher Dean Ferguson of Spencer was charged with possession of precursors…a class “D” felony; manufacture of a controlled substance…a class “B” felony; and child endangerment…an aggravated misdemeanor. Ferguson appeared Thursday before a magistrate and was released on a personal recognizance bond.
Police were called to 104 west Park Street around 11:00 a.m. Wednesday on the report of a possible meth lab. Upon entry, police say they discovered items leading them to believe a meth lab had been operating there. A representative of the state fire marshall’s office was called to the scene and verified officer’s suspicions. A search warrant was obtained and executed by members of the state meth lab team. A hazardous material disposal team from Kansas City was called to dispose of the contaminated materials.
Spencer Police Chief Mike Lashbrook tells KUOO news this lab was different from others discovered recently in the area as this one involved the use of red phosphorous. The highly volatile compound is used as a heat source in a new method of cooking meth.
Lashbrook says the child endangerment charge was filed against Ferguson as the result of a 12-year-old child who was reportedly living at the residence.
