(Spirit Lake)– Officials are investigating an alleged incident from early Saturday morning in the Francis Sites area of East Lake Okoboji near the narrows.
The Iowa Department of Natural Resources says two personal water craft collided with a dock. 21-year-old Joseph Feese of Spirit Lake was charged with boating while intoxicated and operating without lights. Also charged was 20-year-old Steven James Schmillen of LeMars. He was cited for boating while intoxicated and interference with official acts. Both men were booked into the Dickinson County Jail.
Authorities say Feese sustained minor injuries in the incident but denied immediate treatment.
The name of the person who owns the dock wasn’t available.
Extensive damage was reported to both jet skis…owned by Schmillen’s parents; and to the dock which had an “L” extension ripped off it.
Authorities say they were called to the scene after neighbors reported a large gathering of young people and a loud bang. The group quickly dispersed once officers arrived. Feese and Schmillen weren’t so lucky, though. They were tracked down with the assistance of an infra-red camera that was recently purchased by the Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office.
The alleged incident took place around 1:00 a.m. Saturday.
