(Spencer)– Officials with the Spencer-based Northwest Aging Association are concerned over the future of a program that provides services to older residents who previously were not eligible for assistance.
Cynthia Beauman, Executive Director for the association, says the trust assisted about 500 older northwest Iowans in the 2001 fiscal year. Statewide, the program helped out about eight thousand people, according to Beauman. She says those people had needs that could not be met before because they didn’t meet eligibility guidelines for other assistance programs.
Beauman is concerned the Iowa Legislature may discontinue the Senior Trust Fund…directing the funds to other sources. She’s urging residents to contact lawmakers.
Beauman says discontinuation of the Senior Living Trust would force many older residents into institutionalized care which is much more expensive.
