(Spirit Lake)– The future of Mahannah Auditorium was the topic of a public hearing the Spirit Lake school board held last evening. The facility has been shut down out of health concerns. Air in the auditorium has tested extremely high for fungal contamination. Correcting the problem is going to cost an estimated 430-thousand dollars. Putting in a new ventilation system could cost another million dollars. Put a new sound system, heating and cooling system and a complete rennovation on top of that, and the cost mounts to an estimated four million dollars.
One person who spoke at the hearing urged the board not to spend that kind of money on an aging building.
The board took no action following the hearing. Board President Craig Newell says they’ll take it up again at an upcoming meeting.
