(Spirit Lake)– The Dickinson County Board of Supervisors expressed opposition yesterday to a request to establish a tax increment financing district in the Arthur Heights area on the east side of East Lake Okoboji. Money generated by the district would be used to put in fire hydrants.
Supervisors are concerned that too much of the county’s tax base could eventually get locked up by such districts.
Even though supervisors approved forming a TIF district for the Moore Lake addition…another East Lake Okoboji subdivision just a few miles away from Arthur Heights, they stopped short yesterday of passing a motion to formerly reject the latest TIF request.
Supervisor June Goldman says the situation in the Moore Lake area was different because the houses there are much closer together. Goldman says it’s important TIF requests be considered on a case-by-case basis because of the different circumstances.
