(Spirit Lake)– The city of Spirit Lake is vowing to crack down on loud car stereos and mufflers.
The city council earlier this week adopted a new ordinance that Police Chief Dan Thomsen says has more teeth in it than one that was already on the books.
The new ordinance says you’ll be subject to a misdemeanor if the noise can be heard 50 feet or more from the vehicle.
The new ordinance takes affect immediately.
A misdemeanor is punishable by a fine of 100-dollars plus court costs.
Thomsen says his office has seen an increase in complaints over loud car stereos recently and that’s led to the change.
Many other local cities have similar ordinances on the books.
