Lakes Remain Ice Free

November 23, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– This year could be the latest one of the Iowa Great Lakes has ever frozen over.

The latest Big Spirit Lake (note photo taken Dec. 19th) has ever frozen over is December 21st, 1998. Records for that lake go back to 1955.

The records will probably stand for East and West Lakes Okoboji. The latest East Okoboji has ever frozen over is January 2nd, 1932 while the record for West Okoboji is January 3rd in 1932 and 1967. Records for those lakes have been kept since 1916.

The National Weather Service says much colder temperatures are in the forecast for the upcoming weekend…along with the potential for a snow storm.
