Grocery Association Wants Changes In Bottle Law

November 23, 2014

(Des Moines)– The Iowa Grocery Association is pushing for a major change in the state’s bottle bill.

They say grocery stores should no longer serve as collection sites for cans and bottles…saying the stores are not “garbage dumps”. And the association’s President, Jerry Fleagle, says dirty bottles and cans pose health risks. Fleagle says they should be put at the curbside…not in stores.

Petitions calling for the change are on check-out counters at local grocery stores and stores throughout the state.

The President of the Iowa Recycling Association is defending the current law. DeWayne Johnson attributes it for a 93 percent recycling rate for cans and bottles.

How do you feel about the law? Should grocery stores continue to serve as drop-off points for cans and bottles? You can air your feelings by taking our “Explore Okoboji Opinion Poll” by clicking on the “take our poll” icon on the title bar on our home page.
