Winter Weather Awareness Week

November 23, 2014

(Undated)– Last week’s cold temperatures and the fact the time changed over the weekend means just one thing: old man winter is knocking on our door.

The National Weather Service and Iowa Emergency Management officials have designated the week of October 29th through November 2nd as Winter Weather Awareness Week.

Todd Heitkamp, warning coordination meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls, urges residents to use the week to prepare for the upcoming winter season.

He says it’s a good time to winterize the house by caulking and weather stripping around doors and windows. You should also have your furnace inspected by a qualified technician. Vehicles should also be winterized and equipped with winter survival kits.

Heitkamp says you should also re-familiarize yourself with winter weather terminology.
