(Wasau, Wisconsin)– A Wisconsin appeals court has denied a Spirit Lake man’s request for a new trial.
Michael Carlson had been found guilty by a jury and was sentenced to 14 years in prison.
Carlson’s attorney filed the request for a new trial…saying a juror didn’t know enough english to convict Carlson. The appeals court differed.
The Laotian immigrant was sent a questionnaire as a prospective juror asking if he understood english. The juror answered “no”…but his name still came up for random jury selection.
The issue didn’t come up until the jury started its deliberations. It sent a note to the judge about the juror, but no action was taken.
