Medical Helicopter Makes Emergency Landing

November 23, 2014

(Algona)– A Mercy Air Care helicopter had to make an emergency landing in Algona Friday night while transporting a Pocahontas county man who was seriously injured in a one vehicle accident Friday night near Rolfe.

The Iowa State Patrol says 29-year-old Aaron Wood of Rolfe was eastbound on a county road when he drove off a t-intersection and rolled a van shortly after 8:30 p.m. The van caught fire and was totaled.

Wood received multiple injuries. He was taken by ambulance to the Palo Alto County Hospital in Emmetsburg. Wood was being transferred to North Iowa Mercy Medical Center in Mason City by the air care helicopter when the pilot reported smoke in the cockpit.

The helicopter landed at the Algona Municipal Airport at about 11:00 p.m. Friday. The Kossuth County Law Enforcement Center says an Algona ambulance transported Wood from the airport to the Mason City hospital.

The pilot of the helicopter was able to take care of the problem and flew out of Algona back to Mason City around 1:30 this morning.
