Proposal To Shift Driver’s License Operations To County Treasurers Sparks Concern

November 23, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– A proposal that would have county treasurer offices in Iowa issuing and renewing driver’s licenses has Dickinson County Treasurer Linda Voss concerned.

The Iowa State Association of Counties says the State County Treasurer’s Association and the Department of Transportation have given their blessings to the proposal to shift driver’s license functions to the counties.

Voss says the proposal would basically amount to the state dumping more of its duties onto the counties without providing funding to pay for it. She estimates atleast two new people would have to be hired for her office, and Voss says there’s simply no room for a driver’s license station in the courthouse.

The President of the Iowa State County Treasurer’s Association is in favor of the proposal. Polk County Treasurer Mary Maloney says it would show county government has an important role to play in delivering local service.

The plan would have to be approved by the legislature before it could be implemented.
