(Spirit Lake)– The Okoboji-Spirit Lake Good Neighbor Fund has hit its goal and then some.
Committee Chairman Bob Bergquist says 62,221-dollars has been raised. The goal was 54-thousand.
Officials attribute the successful drive to an initiative through the court system. Under the program, a person who pleads guilty to a crime, particularly a first offender, may be given a deferred judgement on the condition the offender performs 160 hours of community service or gives a thousand dollars to a local charity.
Good Neighbor Fund Treasurer Cheryl Harms says the 8,221-dollar surplus will be kept in the Good Neighbor Treasury to use for emergencies or give a head start on next year’s fund drive.
