LP Gas Leak Sited As Cause For Construction Trailer Explosion

November 23, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– An L-P gas leak was the likely cause of an explosion earlier this week that destroyed a construction trailer just east of the Spirit Lake High School.

Spirit Lake Fire Chief Wally Jorgenson says the State Fire Marshall made that determination after visiting the site. Jorgenson says it’s believed the trailer filled with gas and that it was ignited when a heater with an electric thermostat kicked in.

The heater was connected to an L-P tank about 60 feet away from the trailer.

The trailer and its contents were owned by a Des Moines well drilling company which is putting in a geo thermal heating system for the high school expansion project.

Firefighters were called to the scene around 2:00 a.m. Wednesday when an explosion and fire blew the trailer apart…destroying some equipment inside it. A pickup parked next to the trailer was also damaged.

No injuries were reported.
