(Spirit Lake)– An estimated 400 to 500 acres of grassland went up in smoke Friday in a large grass fire northwest of Spirit Lake.
Fire Chief Wally Jorgenson says the Spirit Lake Fire Department was called to the area of 210th Avenue and 130th Street around 11:40 a.m. Jorgenson says the fire was burning through a grass field and was headed toward a grove and farm house. He says they were able to get it contained before it could get that far. The cause of the blaze isn’t certain. Firefighters were at the scene about three hours.
Jorgenson says the department’s all-terrain-vehicle equipped with a water sprayer played a significant role in battling the blaze as trucks were unable to go into some of the areas where it had spread.
The Milford Fire Department was also called to a grass fire Friday. They were called to a vacant lot just north of 2182 230th Avenue just south of the sanitary sewer plant. The fire was described as very minor. Milford firefighters were called to the scene around 4:00 p.m. They were there for only a few minutes.
No injuries were reported in either blaze.
