Gillnetting Starts

(Orleans)– An annual rite of spring is taking place in the Iowa Great Lakes. The Iowa Department of Natural Resources has started its gillnetting operations on Big Spirit Lake and East Lake Okoboji. Crews starting casting their nets Monday night.

DNR Fisheries Technician Mike Hawkins says gillnetting will continue the next couple of weeks. The fish hatchery in Orleans is open around-the-clock during the operation. The public is invited to stop by.

In addition to Big Spirit and East Lake Okoboji, gillnetting is also taking place on Clear and Storm Lakes. Those eggs are also being reared at the fish hatchery in Orleans.
