(Spirit Lake)– It’s the time of year to be on the lookout for scam artists.
Authorities have received reports recently of possible scam artists making the rounds and calling people on the phone.
Someone has been calling people in the area recently tellimg them they’ve been approved for a credit card through their local bank. The caller then says they need to verify information and asks for the person’s existing credit card numbers and other information. Authorities say you should obviously never give out that information under such circumstances.
Police are also urging residents to use caution when dealing with door-to-door sales people. Many cities, including Spirit Lake, require peddlers and solicitors to have permits. There have been reports of people going door-to-door in Spirit Lake selling vacuum cleaners. But City Administrator Pete Hegeman says his office hadn’t issued any permits for vacuum cleaner sales as of Friday.
Police say if you’re approached by anyone you feel is suspicious or may be selling something without a permit, to contact them as soon as possible.
