(Des Moines)– Spencer’s Main Street program received some recognition this past weekend during the 23rd annual Main Street Awards Ceremony in Des Moines.
It was honored for reaching 20 million dollars in local investment since the program started back in 1987.
The Spencer program was also selected as winner in the “Best Energy Savings Practices” category for switching to LED street light bulbs along Grand Avenue in the downtown area.
Spencer was also recognized in the “Best Total Rehabilitation” for a building over five thousand square feet for the renovation of the former Middle School into apartments.
And Jay Prather of Spencer Main Street was honored as an outstanding volunteer.
The Main Street program gives incentives to communities to help them preserve the character, charm and history of their downtowns.
The program has been offered through the Iowa Department of Economic Development since 1985.
