New Police Chief Announced For Spirit Lake

November 23, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– Spirit Lake Mayor Eric Nielsen announced today (Wed.) the hiring of John Martyr as the city’s new Police Chief. Martyr, who’s currently a chief deputy with the Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office, starts his new job May 20th.

Martyr says building upon the foundation of community-oriented policing is his top priority. He’s calling on more officer interaction with the public, school system, local businesses and other community groups. Martyr says the department will also have a zero tolerance policy when it comes to drugs and other controlled substances; while putting a renewed focus on preventive and educational programs.

Martyr said he also wants to improve communications by having regular meetings with the mayor, all members of city government, and city departments. Martyr says his door will always be open for input and questions from the public as well. He wants to involve the community in various programs such as “National Night Out”, “Neighborhood Watch” and other cooperative programs.

Martyr grew up in Estherville. He’s a graduate of Iowa State University. Prior to moving back to the area several years ago, he served as a police officer in Oregon.
