Authorities Investigate Death Of Spirit Lake Infant

November 23, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– Authorities are investigating the death of a Spirit Lake infant.

A news release issued by the Spirit Lake Police Department has very few details. It says the death apparently took place today (Thursday), and that police are being assisted by the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation.

Law enforcement officers and paramedics were called to a residence on 12th street in Spirit Lake around 12:45 p.m.

Authorities aren’t saying if foul play was involved, if any arrests have been made, or if charges are pending. They say additional information will be released Friday.

Word of the death of another child is sending chills through the community. It’s been a little more than two years since Shelby Duis was found beaten to death in her Spirit Lake home. A judge acquitted her mother, Heidi Watkins, of first degree murder, but found her guilty of multiple acts of child endangerment. Watkins was sentenced to a prison term not to exceed 50 years. Jesse Wendelsdorf, a live-in boyfriend of Watkins at the time, was acquitted of charges in the case.
