Manure Spill Kills More Than 33-Thousand Fish

November 23, 2014

(Estherville)– Officials with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources say last Friday’s manure spill from a cattle lot near Estherville killed more than 33-thousand fish. It happened on a farm owned by former state representative John Greig.

The D-N-R estimates the value of the fish at close to nine thousand-dollars. Greig will have to pay half that and could face an additional fine.

More than 500-thousand gallons of manure leaked when a pipe broke.

Officials estimate 27-thousand fish were killed in the West Fork of the Des Moines River, while 65-hundred were killed in Brown Creek.
