Dickinson County Residents Rally To Protect Children

November 23, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– A group of Dickinson county residents was back on the street Sunday making their feelings known about child abuse.

Sandy Lorenz helped organize the event. She tells KUOO news they want everyone to know the problem with child abuse simply isn’t going to go away on its own. She said they’re calling on communities to band together to stop abuse…and to lobby lawmakers for tougher penalties for abusers.

Organizers of Sunday’s walk in front of the Dickinson County Courthouse say last Friday’s appeal hearing of Heidi Watkins, the ongoing investigation into last month’s death of a Spirit Lake infant, and the discovery of an infant’s body at a recycling center near Storm Lake are causing many people to again focus their attention on the issue.

A similar walk was held two years ago following the death of Shelby Duis.
