New Spirit Lake Police Chief & City Officials Come Under Fire

November 23, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– The recent firing of a Spirit Lake police officer and the demotion of another had some residents asking point blank questions of city officials at a special meeting late Tuesday of the city’s Safety Committee.

The meeting was called at the request of resident Jackie Olson. She and others demanded the committee review the actions of Chief John Martyr. Olson and others who spoke at the meeting contend there were no grounds for the actions taken against officers Doug Ricke and Larry Moorehead.

City officials aren’t commenting. Assistant City Attorney Greg Owen sited the possibility of litigation and personnel issues…which are confidential. Committee member and city councilman Pat McNorton said he’d love to be able to say something…saying committee members have information others in the community don’t have.

The committee agreed to review the comments and concerns expressed at Tuesday’s meeting and will give a full report and recommendation at the next city council meeting.
