Heat Causing Problems With Area Roads

November 23, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– Extreme heat is causing problems on some area roads.

Dakin Schultz is a Field Services Coordinator with the Iowa Department of Transportation’s regional office in Sioux City. He says the heat is causing the pavement in some areas to expand…causing it to buckle or “blow out”. Schultz says the problem usually occurs on concrete pavement…but blacktop is also susceptible.

Schultz says motorists should contact law enforcement if they come across any areas like that.

Pavement blow-ups have been reported the past several days throughout northwest Iowa. Several have occurred on Highway nine just west of Spirit Lake.
