Clay Co. Traffic Stop Lands E’ville Residents In Jail

November 23, 2014

(Spencer)– A traffic stop by Clay county deputies early Sunday has landed two Estherville residents in jail on drug charges.

Around 3:15 a.m. Sunday, authorities say a deputy stopped a northbound Lincoln Navigator on Highway 71 just north of County Road B-14 near Fostoria. A routine investigation led to the discovery that the driver, 21-year-old Tania Luna of Estherville was driving with a suspended license and had an active arrest warrant out of Clay county for fifth degree theft.

A search of the vehicle turned up a baggie containing a yellowish powder on a seat occupied by 24-year-old Joel Hernandez of Estherville.

Both Luna and Hernandez were arrested and taken into custody. Luna is charged with driving while suspended. Hernandez is charged with possession of cocaine. Both were placed in the Clay county jail.

In addition, it’s believed Hernandez is in the U-S illegally. Immigration officials are checking his status.
