Dickinson Supers Repeal Flood Ordinance…With Conditions

November 23, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– The Dickinson county board of supervisors voted unanimously Tuesday to repeal the county’s flood plain ordinance contingent on getting favorable responses from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

The county wants something in writing saying FEMA would still provide assistance should another devastating flood strike and the county is no longer enrolled in the program.

Those questions had originally been put to state officials, but Planning and Zoning Administrator David Kolhaase says they’ve been referred to federal officials, and they’re still waiting for a reply.

Several lakes are residents who live in the flood plain want the flood ordinance repealed, saying it requires them to go through additional red tape and expense when remodeling or building new.

The county adopted the ordinance as a result of the 1993 flood.
