Property Taxes To Increase As Tax Credits Decrease

November 23, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– The state’s budget woes are about to come home to roost.

While Iowa lawmakers were forced to cut budgets of state agencies to make ends meet, they also reduced the amount the state chips in to help pay property taxes. For example, the homestead tax credit was reduced by 10 percent while the subsidy for the low income/elderly was slashed by 20 percent. That means those with an annual income of under 8,900-dollars will face a 200-dollar increase in property taxes.

Dickinson County Treasurer Linda Voss says the changes will be reflected on property tax statements that will be going out in the next few weeks.
