Regatta To Bring Hundreds Of Young Sailers To Iowa Great Lakes

November 23, 2014

(Wahpeton)– More than 250 sailers age 16 and under from throughout the upper midwest will be in the Iowa Great Lakes later this week. They’ll be competing in the X Inland Championship Regatta Wednesday through Saturday on West Lake Okoboji.

The event is being hosted by the Okoboji Yacht Club and is being chaired by Doctor Walter Mendenhall. He tells KUOO news there will be a total of five races, one in the morning and one in the afternoon Thursday and Friday with the championship Saturday morning.

Dr. Mendenhall says the regatta only comes to Okoboji once every five years. He says the Okoboji Yacht Club has been a member of the Inner Lakes Yachting Association for nearly a hundred years. Members of the association participate in various regattas on lakes throughout the midwest.

Dr. Mendenhall says everyone is invited to watch the races this Thursday and Friday. The regatta will be headquartered at the Okoboji Yacht Club on Manhattan Beach of West Lake Okoboji. Boats for spectators will be available for those who don’t have their own.
